Jr. Director of Awesomeness

Most students have heard me say, “Double check the address,” before leaving for their shadow day. I did not follow my own directions on May 2nd, the day I went to visit Zauna Nuru-Bates. I ended up in the McKinley Park neighborhood, knocking on a door that belonged to a woman who appeared to have just gotten out of bed. That’s ok! I got a whiff of cat urine when she opened the door, so I was glad I didn’t have to enter. I was early, so it gave me time to reach the correct destination. I made it just in time to Uptown Studios. (Always leave a little early, just in case!)

Zauna is Uptown Studio’s Director of Awesomeness. If you don’t believe me, ask her for a business card; it’s legit. When I got there, Zauna was quick to introduce me to a few of her coworkers, and then showed me her work. That’s right, she showed her evidence. For those who do not know, Uptown Studios is a “creative team specializing in graphic design, website design, hosting and management, video production, social media training and management, brand development, print management and marketing services.” So what does Zauna do?

Zauna has 5 clients:

  1. Sheringham Point Lighthouse
  2. Greater Broadway District
  3. Capital Region Family Business Center
  4. Turning Point
  5. Sacramento Native American Health Center

For each of her clients, Zauna manages their Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram accounts. She uses a program called Sprouts Social to keep track of all the different accounts. When I asked her what it means to “manage accounts,” Zauna shared a long list of posts she written in the past, and current posts she is working on. All posts go through the editor’s desk first, before publicizing.  Zauna is part of a team!  I was quite impressed, being that it is a huge responsibility to be in charge of pretty much the “face” of 5 clients. Zauna’s mentors must really trust her! In addition to managing her clients’ social media accounts, Zauna provides them with advertisement services. Here are a few examples of ads Zauna made for her clients:  Loaves & Fishes TP drive, Sac Native Health Center eyeglasses ad, Talk They Hear You ad campaign, Second Saturday logo/poster, Small Business Saturday flyer, and Joshua’s House/HCRI Capital Campaign Invitation. Zauna uses several programs to create the ads: Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects. Although Zauna took a course at Sacramento City College, titled, “GCOM 313- Page Layout,” she did not have all of the training needed for the internship. She has spent a lot of time learning the different programs. It didn’t take her mentors long to learn that they had a talented, diligent, and quick-learning intern on their team.

Zauna has been interning for Uptown Studios since September of 2016, but was recently (Jan 2017) hired to work (for pay) on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  Her mentors have invested in Zauna, and their investment has paid off.
